GEOTRACK has completed a number of
non-exclusive AFTA® Thermal History Reconstruction studies covering
the 2007 offshore petroleum exploration release areas, specifically
aimed at understanding the key thermal history factors in the petroleum
systems of these regions.
These studies provide vital information
on the timing of hydrocarbon generation, allowing reliable definition
of areas where generation post-dates formation of structures. THR
using AFTA® and vitrinite reflectance (VR) can be used
to identify, quantify and characterise the major paleo-thermal
episodes which have affected a sedimentary basin. The information
provided from THR, particularly in areas affected by multiple paleo-thermal
episodes, cannot be obtained from any other technique. THR provides
a reconstructed maturation history firmly constrained by measured
data. When considered in relation to information on the timing of
structures (and other factors eg. seal, source), this can significantly
reduce exploration risk.
These studies cover the Australian
Government, Department of Industry Tourism and Resources, release
of Offshore Petroleum Exploration Areas 2007.
